How modern graphics work

What modern embedded graphics can do

In early 2022, one of the leading computer hardware manufacturers AMD has launched Ryzen 6000 series processors based on Zen3+ architecture and equipped with integrated graphics based on RDNA 2, the latest graphic architecture used by the company.

New processors are interesting because they are optimized as much as possible in terms of power efficiency, and the manufacturer managed to do this without sacrificing performance. The 6000 series processors are ahead of the 5000 series processors in many ways.

Let’s take a look at how fast a 2022 ASUS ROG Zephirus G14 notebook works with the new processor. The processor on this laptop is the AMD Ryzen 6900HS. A 32GB DDR5-4800 shared memory module is responsible for the video memory. This is where the video memory is taken from, as the integrated graphics has no memory resource of its own.

Of course, it would be very interesting to test a desktop PC running a 6000-series processor with integrated graphics. After all, in this case you could use more advanced and faster RAM modules. And such a tandem would surely be able to surprise the performance. But for now, as they say, we have what we have, and so we will proceed from these possibilities.

It should be noted at once that TDP power consumption of Ryzen 9 6900HS is limited to 50 watts, from which in resource-intensive graphics processing tasks the graphics part of the APU accounts for 35 watts and the CPU part for 15 watts. It’s also worth noting that ray tracing and hardware acceleration are supported by the graphics part.

Modern graphics

So, the performance figures, if you compare with desktop PC stuffing, are about the same as GTX 1050, and in some parameters even better. In particular, very good results show the work “iron” when you run in 1080p-resolution games from a standard list of eSports disciplines such as League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter Strike Global Offensive and others.

Everything runs smoothly in games that can already be classified as “timeless classics” like Tales of Berseria, Titanfall 2, Final Fantasy XIV and several others.

There are also absolutely no problems in relatively modern, but not particularly hardware-intensive or well-optimised games like Gears 5, Genshin Impact, Tales of Arise and other games of this kind.

And finally, games which are very hard on hardware, and games which are very, very optimised: RDR2, Rune 2,. Devil’s Hunt 8, GreedFall, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. The Ryzen 9 6900HS integrated graphics also handled them quite decently.

Based on all stated above we can conclude that AMD has a very interesting and very promising development. We will also see it in the new Zenbook OLED announced by ASUS, positioned as thin and light. It will get AMD Ryzen 7 6800U. By the way, due to the design features of the model, the manufacturer will have to limit the power consumption of the processor to 30 watts, but this is unlikely to have a significant negative impact on performance.
